Environment Canada has issued both severe thunderstorm watches and severe thunderstorm warnings for Montreal and surrounding areas.

At 9:54 a thunderstorm watch was issued for the Châteauguay – La Prairie area, the Laval area, the Longueuil – Varennes area and the Montréal Island area.

At 10:30 a.m. this morning, the thunderstorm watch was upgraded to a thunderstorm warning for the following areas: Châteauguay – La Prairie and Longueuil – Varennes.

According to Environment Canada, severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when "imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall."

The forecast for Montreal this afternoon predicts 26 degrees with a risk of showers or thunderstorms. The city can expect between 15-20 mm of rain in a downpour, but, if there is a thunderstorm, we will see up to 50 mm of rain.

Hopefully, this rain will finally clear up the oppressive humidity that has been plaguing Montreal for several days.

As of right now, the humidex is at 34 degrees. Luckily, Environment Canada predicts that temperatures will be cooler and dryer as of tomorrow, with highs of about 24 degrees and lows of 14 degrees.

During thunderstorms, Environment Canada recommends that you seek cover and that you be cautious of flash floods, pooling on roads, and lightning.

"Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year," the agency reminds readers. "Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!"
