Environment Canada has issued a Freezing Rain Warning for much of Southern Quebec today, with regions from Témiscamingue to Montérégie expected to get hit with the slippery stuff throughout the day and into tonight. Environment Canada is also expecting that some regions like Montreal will also see this freezing rain "taper to showers late Friday morning," which means it's not going to be just today that gets a little slippery.
Whether you're headed back to work today or tomorrow you're going to want to keep your wits about you as you move through the city.
The freezing rain is expected to hit Montreal this evening, meaning the commute home today could be a little treacherous as "surfaces, such as roads and sidewalks," are likely going to become icy and slippery.
Environment Canada is expecting that the freezing rain will change to rain or just a drizzle later in the morning Friday, as the temperature creeps above zero.
So it looks like today and tomorrow are going to be pretty gross, but the weekend is going to be awesome if you hate the cold, as we're expecting two whole days of sun and plus-zero weather.
And if you've been missing the snow, good news: It's coming back next week.
Take a look at the forecasts below.
Freezing Rain Warnings are issued by Environment Canada when "rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces," meaning that's what we can expect today in all the regions highlighted below.
Regions impacted by the Freezing Rain Warning include:
- Drummondville - Bois-Franc
- Eastern Townships
- La Vérendrye Wildlife Reservce
- Lachute - Saint-Jérôme
- Metro Montréal - Laval
- Mont-Tremblant Park - Saint-Michel-des-Saints
- Richelieu Valley - Saint-Hyacinthe
- Upper Gatineau - Lièvre - Papineau
- Vaudreuil - Soulanges - Huntingdon
The warning issued for Montreal explains that the freezing rain is expected to move eastward, starting in Témiscamingue and reaching "the Ottawa Valley, the Lower Laurentians, the Greater Montreal and the Montérégie this evening."
You can see above that tonight is forecasted to be around -4C with a mix of rain and freezing rain that are sure to make sidewalks and roads slick for the commute home this evening and potentially even worse tomorrow morning.
Though as the temperature creeps up above zero the rain will eventually be just that, and hopefully, the warmer temperature will manage to melt some of the ice that builds up overnight tonight.
And check out that weekend forecast!
After the mix of sun and clouds and nice above-zero temperatures that we can expect in Montreal this weekend, snow lovers will be glad to see the forecast for next week.
Environment Canada is calling for snow throughout Monday and Tuesday and potentially even into Wednesday.
So we may not have had a White Christmas but the snow will be back in no time.
And the snow really does make the cold bearable, so I'm beyond ready to get some of that fluffy white stuff back.
Until then, stay safe as you move through the city today and tomorrow, Montreal... it's going to be slippery.
