In his daily COVID-19 update on Wednesday, Premier François Legault reassured tenants who might be worried about paying their rent on time by asking landlords to wait a few days before collecting rent if they can. The April rent due date is fast approaching and tenants in Quebec who are affected by COVID-19 could get a bit of breathing room. As many people have lost their incomes due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Quebec government hopes that landlords will offer a bit of leeway.

"I would like to appeal today to all landlords to be understanding, to be able to wait a few days before receiving the April 1 rent," he said, explaining that cheques from the federal government for people whose jobs were impacted by the COVID-19 crisis should arrive by April 6.

"That does not mean that those who are able to pay it should not pay it, because some landlords are counting on it to have an income."

"But let's be understanding."

If some landlords are able to delay rent collection, it could bring some much-needed relief to renters in Quebec, many of whom could feel a huge financial strain as the COVID-19 outbreak continues.

People in self-isolation in Quebec who are also unable to work can also apply for emergency funding from the provincial government.

With no indication of the COVID-19 outbreak ending anytime soon, provincial and federal governments have taken many measures to protect the public and ensure that citizens have access to all the support they need.

Also on Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a program through which people without work because of the pandemic could receive $2,000/month.

As of March 25, there are a total of 1,339 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Quebec — more than double the number Monday.

The sharp increase this week is due in part to a change in what is considered a "confirmed case" as well as an expansion of testing capacity.

Quebec health officials released guidelines for individuals to follow to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in the province. You can read about them here.
