In another tragic turn, reports now indicate the father who committed alate Tuesday night had actually been hospitalized recently for expressing "suicidal remarks."
According to TVA Nouvelles, after being told that his wife was interested in filing for divorce, the 40-year-old father, whose name we now know to be Jonathan Pomares, was taken to Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont.
In addition to expressing the intention to take his own life, he also showed signs of intoxication, and TVA reports that he had consumed "a large quantity of alcohol and medicine."
They also note that despite his agitation and distress while being transported to the hospital, he was discharged "shortly thereafter."
TVA also reached out to the CSDM, who did not respond to their request for comment, to ask if they had provided Pomares with any psychological support. Pomares had been working for the CSDM as a cook and was even recently promoted to a more permanent position.
He had worked his first day at a school in Rosemont on Monday, as part of a short three-day contract before his new position began. According to sources, he did not finish the day and did not return the next day, which we now know to be the day he took his own life and the life of his two small children.
Pomares had been working as a temporary cook for three years with the CSDM, both in elementary and high schools.
TVA's interest in speaking with the CSDM about Pomares focused on workplace support for mental health issues, particularly in individuals who are employed by the school board.
We, too, reached out to the CSDM for comment but continue to await a response.
The mother of the two children, Hugo, aged 7 and Élise, aged 5, is a researcher in the field of sleep, as TVA notes, and the family had moved here together from Toulouse, France "a little less than 10 years ago."
She was treated for "violent shock" after coming home to find her two children and husband dead inside their home in the borough of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.
Those who knew Pomares were significantly shocked, as well, by the news that he had committed these terrible murders before taking his own life.
However, the news that he had been recently hospitalized for threats of suicide indicates that this was something he had been struggling with for some time.
