- One of the most popular Montreal grocery stores, IGA, has taken protective measures to help decrease the spread of COVID-19 in the city.
- Some of these measures include installing plexiglass in front of stores' cashpoints and closing all self-serve areas.
- Sobeys, the parent company of IGA, released a press release stating all the actions that are being taken, which you can find below.
Many companies are taking it upon themselves to make major changes to protect their clients and employees from the spread of COVID-19. Although many businesses have decided to temporarily close, essentials such as Montreal grocery stores are remaining open in order to keep food supplies going. IGA, which is owned by Sobeys, has taken matters into its own hands and has decided to shield employees from customers at their cashpoints.
At the IGA located at 900 rue St-Zotique in Montreal, all the cashiers are protected by plexiglass. One employee told me that they were going to try and be covered on the back as well as the front. However, he did go on to tell me that he still does not feel "100% safe".
Although we did not confirm that all IGAs across Quebec have taken the same action, MTL Blog reached out and is awaiting a response. This is not only safe for the employees but also more secure for the customers.
In a press release written by President and CEO Michael Meline, stating that their team is "washing their hands every fifteen minutes" and that they have added, "extra resources to the frontline, enabling cashiers to wipe down common areas more often."
All employees who feel sick are being asked to stay home.
Along with this, the company has implemented "procedures recommended by healthy authorities for those who have travelled and been exposed to others who have travelled."
Another great thing that the company has done is introduced a senior shopping hour allowing the most "vulnerable among us a dedicated time to shop for goods."
They have also closed all self-serve areas, like those for dry nuts and chocolate-covered almonds.
Michael Medline, Sobey's CEO and President concluded the press statement by stating that he is proud of the "positive feedback and words of gratitude" that customers have been giving employees.
Medline also gave thanks to the "distribution and transportation team for the enormous efforts and passion they bring to their jobs."
