Montreal has a food niche to cater to every taste. From Japanese street food to ketchup-flavoured ice cream, there's a food item or festival out there to pique the interest of all Montrealers. This summer is no exception.
For the first time ever this year, a festival dedicated to fermented food and fermentation is coming to the city. Ferment Fest MTL has as its goal to help Montrealers "discover the world of fermentation and its benefits by bringing amateurs and professionals together in one place," according to the Facebook event page.
"This event is for amateurs, specialists" and everyone who is "simply curious to know more about the phenomenon. It offers the opportunity to interact with specialists in the field and taste artisan products."
"The popular view that food is viewed as an entity with only two states, fresh or outdated, is simplistic. We are convinced that food should rather be perceived as a continuum. Between these two states exists a creative universe, that of the world of fermentation," the festival website continues.
Among the artisan products that will be on display and available to taste will be beer, bread, cheese, kombucha, kimchi, tempeh, and cider. Attendees will also get to attend workshops to learn how to make their very own fermented foods.
A series of conferences and market where participants can purchase equipment will ensure that you leave the Ferment Fest ready to cultivate your fermenting skills.
If you, yourself, produce your own fermented products, you may also register to display your goods in the festival councourse and share your love of fermentation with passersby.
Ferment Fest will take place at Jean-Talon Market on September 14th, 2019. For complete information, refer to the festival website here.
