The Montreal police (SPVM) are appealing to the public to help identify an individual caught on security camera lighting private property on fire in the Town of Mount Royal.

In a tweet posted today, July 9th, the SPVM states that the suspect is "linked to an event on June 27 on Trenton Avenue in the Town of Mount Royal. The suspect entered the backyard of a house and set the outdoor furniture on fire."

In an accompanying video, the suspect (who the SPVM identifies as a man) can be seen slowly ascending steps onto a back yard deck. They then make use of a cigarette to ignite the cushion of an outdoor couch.

The fire eventually engulfs the entire couch. It is unclear if there was other damage to nearby furniture or infrastructure.

Watch the video below:

The police say that the man is between the ages of 40 and 50. He is about 180 cm (5 '11' ') tall and weighs approximately 85 kg (190 lb).

The police do not attach a possible motive to the act of arson, nor do they identify the specific property.

Trenton avenue is a residential street that stretches between Chemin Canora and Chemin Selwood in TMR. It runs near both the Acadie blue line metro station and the Gare Canora.

The SPVM encourages "anyone with information that could identify this man can contact 911, visit their neighborhood station or contact Info-Crime Montreal at 514-393-1133 or online at www.infocrimemontreal.ca."
