- The addition of Joliette to the list of Montreal STM metro stations with cell service leaves just 14 without service.
- The STM plans to have a fully connected network by the end of 2020.
City residents are unlikely to admit it, but the Montreal STM metro network is pretty fantastic.
Although we constantly complain about certain things throughout our transit system, perks like an entirely underground train network, an integrated bus and metro fare system, and high-capacity trains, make the STM one of the most reliable networks on the continent.
The slow rollout of cell and internet service in metro stations is also making that busy commute home from work a little more enjoyable.
Today, the STM announced the latest addition to this service. Joliette metro station on the green line is now connected. You will now be able to use your phone at yet another stop in our city.
As most of you may already know, a lot of stops are already able to receive cell service. Passengers can already get reception on every stop on the orange, blue, and yellow lines. As of today, service is only available between Joliette and Lionel-Groulx stations on the green line.
That leaves just the following green line stations without cell service for the time being:
- De l'Église
Cell service allows people waiting for a train to browse the web, listen to live music, watch videos, check social media and receive calls and text messages.
It will also have those taking the metro feeling safer, knowing that they can call someone for help if anything were to happen.
This project was launched in 2014 by Bell, Rogers, TELUS and Videotron telecommunications and scheduled for completion in 2020.
I know a lot of people are wondering if Wi-Fi will ever be available on the metro and as of now there is no plan to offer that service.
Hopefully one day we will be able to connect to a metro Wi-Fi and browse the internet without having to worry about our data plan. Until then, we will be grateful for getting reception at yet another station.
If the Joliette stop is on your route home, you should be happy about this news. Hit us up and let us know if the service is working!
