- Montreal will host the filming of the Disney+ reboot of Home Alone with Ellie Kemper in a leading role.
- She previously hosted a gala for Just For Laughs.
- This won't be her first time in the city, but if her JFL monologue is any indication, it might be her most uncomfortable visit yet.
If you don't already know, Montreal and its surroundings will serve as the backdrop for Disney+'s reboot of Home Alone. Ellie Kemper, best known for her role in The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, will star in the production, which will reportedly reimagine the original plot. She is joined on the cast by Rob Delaney and Archie Yates, who is slated to play the abandoned child. Filming is scheduled to begin in February 2020 and we can already confirm some of the filming locations.
In fact, the Home Alone production won't be Kemper's first work in Montreal. She previously hosted a comedy gala for the 2015 edition of Just For Laughs.
"I'm so excited to be in Canada because honestly I was worried it was just a myth," she told the audience during her opening monologue for the gala.
"Actually if you're from Canada where did your parents threaten to send you when you were bad?"
Unfortunately, however, her Home Alone work may be an uncomfortable return to the Quebec metropolis.
"I do love French Canada, though. It's so beautiful here."
"I once went to Quebec City in February. It was gorgeous. I stood outside for more than two minutes so now I can't bear children."
This year, thankfully, she might be able to count on a milder than normal February.
You can watch an excerpt from her Just For Laughs opening below.
Kemper won't be the only celebrity in Montreal this winter with little tolerance for the cold.
Vanessa Kirby and Iliza, cast members on the Pieces of a Woman movie currently filming in the city and starring Shia LaBeouf, have also expressed their shock at the city's polar temperatures.
"I went to school in Boston and I've never known a cold like this," Iliza wrote in an Instagram story in mid-January.
Kirby, meanwhile, merely posted an image of a snow-covered park alongside a screenshot of a weather app indicating a temperature of -18 C.
Reviewing Kemper's 2015 gala, the Montreal Gazette's Bill Brownstein noted that she "appears as relentlessly upbeat and polite as her Kimmy character."
We'll have to wait and see whether her Home Alone character exudes the same distinctive goofy energy.
