- This gives Montrealers an opportunity to enjoy the celebrations in the Old Port without worrying about missing the last train.
Once again this year, the STM will keep the Montreal metro running all night long between December 31 and January 1, 2020. "To facilitate your celebrations and ring in the New Year with you, the metro will run all night on December 31," the company states on its website. "Take advantage of this unique night to celebrate as you see fit, without worrying about anything other than the pleasure of seeing your family or friends."
In addition, transit for children ages six to 11 will be free if they're in the company of an adult with a valid pass. Children under six, the STM reminds us, can always ride for free.
Adults shouldn't expect to avoid fares, however. Standard rates will apply on December 31 and January 1 for everyone else.
The STM hopes "these offers will help you enjoy your festive season hassle-free!" Advertisements for the two offers have also begun to appear within metro stations.
The late-night metro service will make it a lot easier for Montrealers to enjoy the Merry Montreal New Year's Eve celebrations in the Old Port.
"Once again," the free New Year’s Eve "party will be exceptional!" Merry Montreal promises on is website.
"The event will feature many of Quebec’s most talked-about artists on an outdoor stage located in the beautiful setting of the Old Port of Montreal, on Jacques-Cartier pier.
"Get ready for a big midnight countdown and massive fireworks, culminating with an amazing outdoor dancing party! The last night of 2019 will be truly unforgettable."
This isn't the first time this year the STM has stepped up to make travel easier for passengers during a special occasion.
For the September climate strike led by Greta Thunberg, and in the spirit of accessibility and sustainable transport, Mayor Valérie Plante ordered the STM to provide free transit on its entire network.
The nighttime metro service will launch an exciting year of developments for the STM, which will include initiatives to improve customer experience.
More Azur trains on the green line, electric buses, and backdoor card readers are just some of the advances that Montrealers can expect in the year to come.
