There's nothing better than a long weekend, right? This coming Monday, Canada is celebrating its annual statutory holiday, Victoria Day. If you have no idea what that is, that's because, in Quebec, we call it La Journée des Patriotes.
Here, our distinct society allows us to ignore the Queen and celebrate some rebellion that happened against the British in 1837, which when you think about it, is classic Quebec. Though I would love it if the Journée des Patriotes gathering happened at Square Victoria.
Can someone make that happen?
Before I get lost in a web of laughing at my own jokes, here's a complete list of what's open and what's closed on Monday, May 20th.
Enjoy the long weekend, Montreal!
Many stores will remain open throughout the day. All malls and major outlets will also be open during their regular store hours.
Keep in mind that some stores might choose to remain closed, so make sure to look ahead or call before you go out.
Banks, post offices, municipal offices, and city hall will be closed on Monday.
SAQ stores will be open on Monday and so will the SQDC as they're beginning to implement new store hours. However, the SAQ website states that stores in malls will be closed if the mall is also closed.
Some larger grocery stores will be open but that doesn't mean that your neighbourhood IGA will be. Check your local grocery store's hours just in case. Outdoor markets such as Atwater and Jean-Talon will be open.
Large chain pharmacies might be open, but make sure to check individual store hours.
Most restaurants and bars will remain open as usual.
The STM runs on the weekend schedule this Monday and finally, garbage pickup will continue as usual.
Fun Fun Fun
La Ronde officially opened recently and will be open during regular hours. So will the Casino de Montreal.
The Biodome, Science Centre, and Botanical Garden will be open. Museums including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the McCord, and others will remain open.
Movie theatres will be open during regular hours.
It might rain on Monday, but if it doesn't, it'll be around 22°C! Keep an eye on the weather if you're planning on spending your day at the park.
Hope this helps you all enjoy a carefree Victoria Day! Wait, I mean, Journée des Patriotes.
Point is, regardless of what you're celebrating, you probably have a day off work, so forget about Queens and rebellions and just have a good time!
