• One of Quebec's most celebrated and successful directors, Denis Villeneuve, has been named Filmmaker of the Decade by the Hollywood Critics Association.
  • The award celebrates Villeneuve's numerous contributions to contemporary film, movies like Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, Arrival, Sicario, and Blade Runner 2049.
  • Unsurprisingly, people on Twitter are beyond excited for him.

Quebec director and filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has been named the Filmmaker of the Decade by the Hollywood Critics Association. Villeneuve was born in Bécancour, Quebec, just across the St-Lawrence from Trois-Rivières. He is known for of his many, now-iconic films, such as Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, Arrival, Sicario, and Blade Runner 2049. Villeneuve has also written, directed and produced a much-anticipated Dune remake that is slated for release in late 2020.

Villeneuve is also well-known in Quebec for one of his earlier films, Polytechnique, which was released in 2009 and tells the story of Montreal's infamous 1989 École Polytechnique massacre of fourteen female students.

Villeneuve's films all carry a distinct style, that many have said bridge the gap between old and new cinema.

His eye for aesthetics and his ability to eke out quiet human subtleties across his body of work, which does span the entire decade, make this choice by the Hollywood Critics Association feel very well-founded.

But, I might be biased.

The stories he tells and the way he goes about telling them really do stick with you. I can remember, very distinctly, when and where I saw each of Villeneuve's movies for the first time, and as I write about them now, I can feel their lingering impact.

The Hollywood Critic's Association took to Twitter this week to make the announcement that they would be honouring Villeneuve for his decade of outstanding work.

The ceremony takes place early next year, where other stars like Olivia Wilde will also be given honourary awards.

Response to the news could not have been more positive, with fans and film critics alike coming together to

Even CAQ deputy Martel Donald for Nicolet-Bécancour couldn't help but share his excitement and pride for the announcement.

And, of course, Val Plante was sure to throw her congratulations out there as well.

"Her tweet reads, "Congratulations to Denis Villeneuve, named filmmaker of the decade by the @LAOFCS 🙌 It is a fully deserved title for those who, from Incendies to Blade Runner 2049 via Sicario or Arrival, have demonstrated that they can tell, move and leave their mark 🎬🏆."

The Hollywood Critics Association was formerly known as the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society, hence the Twitter handle @LAOFCS.
