A rather impressive accident occurred Thursday in Quebec City. As a blizzard brought near whiteout conditions to much of southern Quebec, a semi-trailer truck crashed on the Laurentian autoroute at boulevard Lebourgneuf in the early afternoon. Striking photos of the incident show that the truck's cab smashed through the overpass guardrail before landing on the edge of the highway below. According to reports, the driver did not sustain any major injuries.

However, the Service de police la Ville de Québec (SPVQ) indicated on its Twitter account that the cab was threatening to fall onto the boulevard.

The authorities, therefore, recommended that motorists avoid the Lebourgneuf and Atrium areas as traffic was disrupted.

After assessing that "towing work [was] expected to take several hours," the Sécurité publique de la Ville de Québec later announced a partial closure of the boulevard.

Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene to assist the driver. Urgence Pompiers Ville de Québec indicated on its Facebook page that no one was trapped in the vehicle.

Witnesses on the road shared photos of the scene.

"It's hell on the roads of Quebec City. This trailer truck overturned on the Laurentian Autoroute at the Lebourgneuf exit," said Pierre Jobin, a journalist for TVA.

This accident is already causing a lot of slowdowns in the area.

Google Maps shows severe traffic in the whole of the Quebec City area, where, on some routes, several lanes are closed due to difficult weather conditions.

On Twitter, the provincial Ministry of Transportation's Quebec 511 advised drivers to not "let winter road conditions surprise you. In the event of a storm, consider delaying any non-emergency travel."

Sécurité publique de la Ville de Québec also "reminds you to clear your car of snow, turn on your headlights and adapt your driving if you have to travel. Safety is a shared responsibility."

Stay tuned for updates.
