Groceries are super expensive these days. There's no denying it - grocery shopping is quickly becoming the top expense for many Canadians. If you're wondering why, look no further than this article about the impact of inflation in Canada right now.
Not only do budgetary considerations come into play when deciding what to buy, but like many Canadians, there is much concern about food waste. Not only individuals but businesses contribute to over half the food being thrown away.
To combat this issue, IGA has partnered up with FoodHero, a local app that helps people save money on fresh, perfectly edible surplus food. Thanks to this, Quebeckers can prevent food waste while saving up to 60% off on some products!
How it works is simple. Download the FoodHero app, locate your closest participating IGA, and shop! You simply fill a shopping cart and then decide at what time you'll pick up your purchase.
FoodHero is an ingenious app developed by a local team which aims to reduce the impact of food waste in Quebec.
The products you'll see on the app are products that are close to being thrown away such as nearly expired goods, "ugly" produce, damaged packaging, and day-old prepared meals.
At first, FoodHero partnered up with IGA Langelier to test out their product and it was an incredible success. This year, they've partnered up five other stores. These include:
- IGA extra Langelier
- IGA Barcelo
- IGA extra Place Longueuil
- IGA Millen
- IGA extra Marché Sénécal,
- IGA extra Famille Duchemin
The tweet above reads: Ban single-use plastics when you're shopping for fruits and vegetables in our grocery stores! We're launching a new reusable bag for raw produce, now available in-store and online!
IGA and FoodHero are tackling the serious problem of food waste by offering this unique service to all customers across Quebec. Buying groceries has never been more affordable!
The project is set to launch across all IGA stores in Quebec, but no official date has been announced. IGA's competitors, Maxi and Provigo offer similar services through the Flashfood app.
This program is already available at the pilot store on Langelier and has now expanded to the five other stores mentioned above. They hope to soon expand to all IGA locations across Quebec, according to the press release. Will you take advantage of these incredible offers?
