In the wake of the events surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, which is disrupting people's lifestyles around the globe, health and safety guidelines must be followed. This is to ensure that we are all doing the most to stop the spread of the virus. On Monday, March 23, the Government of Quebec released a self-care guide for people to protect themselves against COVID-19.

It outlines what you must do to protect "your health and the health of others" during this public health emergency.

This guide includes not only ways to protect yourself, but also basic care and what to do if you think you need care and services.

The Government of Quebec's self-care guide also reminds us that all ages can be affected by COVID-19, whether they be children, adults, or seniors.

With the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Quebec continuing to rise every day, this guide seemed rather essential to ensure everyone's well-being.

Below is a brief overview of this self-care guide, which lists all the important aspects to consider during this period of social distancing in Quebec.

The symptoms listed in the document are the same as those mentioned by the authorities since the beginning of the epidemic: cough, fever, extreme fatigue and, in some cases, difficulty breathing and pneumonia.

It also repeats the steps to be taken when one has these symptoms: stay home and avoid human contact, wash your hands, practice proper respiratory hygiene, and contact the coronavirus info line at 1-877-644-4545.

And in the case of severe breathing difficulties, call 911.

The best means of prevention are also indicated, which you can see below.

Handwashing is a central point in preventing the spread of the virus. It is recommended to do it often, especially:

  • Before touching your face (eyes, mouth, nose).

  • After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

  • Before and after caring for a loved one.

  • When hands are visibly dirty or after touching something dirty.

  • Before and after preparing meals.

  • Before and after eating.

  • After going to the toilet.

  • Before and after going to a public place.

In addition, it is reiterated that this should be done with "lukewarm water and soap or with an alcohol-based antiseptic gel, foam or liquid (60% to 70% alcohol concentration)."

Isolation for 14 days after returning from a trip, cleaning and protecting one's environment, resting and staying hydrated by drinking at least 1.5 litres of water a day are also among these precautions.

Although "treatment of the coronavirus disease does not require specific drugs" in the absence of complications, indications for and important precautions about good over-the-counter drugs that can relieve COVID-19 are presented.

In the end, it is always advised to seek advice from a pharmacist, but a few products are still suggested.

The government states that "products containing the same ingredients, such as Tylenol® and Tylenol sinus®, should not be taken at the same time."

Although this is not confirmed or refuted, there is some clinical evidence to suggest that anti-inflammatory drugs, including ibuprofen, should be avoided as they may aggravate the infection.

A personal medical record to be completed is also attached at the end of the guide. It is recommended that you bring it "with you to a medical consultation."
