For some Quebec companies, confinement has posed an enormous financial risk. For the Spa Mathers Ciel Nordique de Saint-Eustache, that risk proved too great. The absence of customers and doubt about an eventual return to normal activities led the Mathers Group to close shop.

The news was announced in a press release published on the spa's Facebook page on Tuesday, April 21, 2020.

The Group also confirmed the closure of the Centre Sportif Saint-Eustache and the Texas Star Restaurant.

Open since 2013, the 22,000-square-foot, four-storey urban spa was closed on the evening of March 15 due to government recommendations.

What was supposed to be a temporary situation is now a permanent one.

Referring to the pandemic, the Mathers Group explains that, "in a context as uncertain as the one we are currently facing, it is unfortunately impossible for us to continue to operate these three businesses."

The Group promises to detail a process through which customers can receive reimbursements for gift cards purchased at the spa and through third parties.

As for members, automatic debit withdrawals were suspended on March 16 and will not resume. Reimbursement cheques will go out by mail.

The same is true for customers of the Centre Sportif Saint-Eustache.

The owners specified that, despite rumours about a new residential development, no decision has been made as to the sale of the land.

The news speaks to more widespread uncertainty about the stability of non-essential businesses, especially those that require gatherings.

Premier François Legault has said that the government is preparing a plan to gradually reopen the province but with a focus on those enterprises that can maintain social distancing measures within their establishments.

Festivals and other large cultural events, meanwhile, have been cancelled through August.

Legault has promised to share more details about the 'deconfinement plan' in the coming days.
