The Government Of Canada Has Issued Urgent New Travel Advisories For Canadians

The advisories cover 14 popular travel destinations.

The government of Canada is constantly updating its list of Travel Advice and Advisories to reflect changing threats and circumstances in countries around the world.

Below are compiled urgent advisories regarding travel to fourteen popular destinations for Canadians. All of these advisories either warn Canadians to "exercise a high degree of caution," "avoid all non-essential travel," or "avoid all travel."

The government issued or updated these advisories between January 14 and February 19, 2019.

For each country, advisories are quoted directly from the Travel Advisory site to ensure that only the most accurate information is conveyed and to conform with the government's own definitions and specific geographic designations.

"Exercise a high degree of caution due to a continuing threat of terrorist attacks throughout the country at all times."

"Avoid non-essential travel to the following states, due to conflict:

  • Arunachal Pradesh
  • Assam
  • Manipur
  • Meghalaya
  • Mizoram

Madagascar

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Madagascar due to the high crime rate and the potential for political instability."

"Avoid all travel to Batterie Beach, just north of Toliara, where violent assaults have occurred."


Indonesia

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia due to political and social tensions and the threat of terrorism throughout the country."

"Avoid non-essential travel to Central Sulawesi due to damage from earthquake and to the province of Papua due to the regular occurrence of violent incidents."

Haiti

"Avoid all travel to Haiti due to civil unrest throughout the country. The security situation could further deteriorate quickly. You should consider leaving by commercial means while they are available, if you can do so safely."


Venezuela

"Avoid all travel to Venezuela due to the significant level of violent crime, the unstable political and economic situations and the decline in basic living conditions, including shortages of medication, food staples, gasoline and water."


Philippines

"Exercise a high degree of caution in the Philippines due to the threat of terrorism and the high level of crime."

"Avoid non-essential travel to the urban areas of Davao City, due to security concerns and the implementation of martial law in the Mindanao Region."

"Avoid all travel to the Sulu Archipelago and through the southern Sulu Sea due to the threat of piracy and kidnappings in this area. Also avoid all travel to the Mindanao Region (excluding urban areas of Davao City) due to the serious threat of terrorist attacks and kidnapping. The Government of Canada’s ability to provide consular assistance in this region is limited."

Jordan

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Jordan due to the threat of terrorism, civil unrest and demonstrations."

"Avoid non-essential travel to all refugee camps in Jordan."

"Avoid all travel to all areas within 5 km of the border with Syria, with the exception of the tourist site Umm Qais, due to incidents linked to the conflict in Syria. Also avoid all travel to all areas within 5 km of the border with Iraq, due to incidents linked to the conflict in that country."

"Large demonstrations mainly occur on Saturdays. Acts of vandalism and violence have occurred. Traffic disruptions have also occurred due to calls to block major transport routes (roads, train stations and airports). Disruptions to public services and closures of various sites usually open to the public (businesses, museums, tourist attractions) have taken place."

  • "Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place."

  • "Monitor local media for the latest information."

Brazil

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Brazil due to high crime rates and regular incidents of gang-related and other violence in urban areas."

Tunisia

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Tunisia due to the nationwide risk of civil unrest and terrorist attacks."

"Avoid non-essential travel to the following areas:

  • the towns of Jendouba, Remada and Sidi Bouzid, as well as the road corridor from the town of Sbeitla to Sidi Bouzid.
  • Tunisia’s Greater South in all areas south of the Jebil National Park (except for areas south of Dehiba and El Borma, where we advise against all travel)."

"Avoid all travel to the following areas:

  • the governorate of Kasserine including the Chaambi Mountain National Park area, due to ongoing security operations
  • within 30 km of the borders with Algeria, except for:
    • within 5km of the touristic towns of Tabarka, Ain Draham, Nefta, Tamerza, Chebika, and
    • within 1km of Mides, (where we advise a high degree of caution)
  • within 40 km of the border with Libya in the governorates of Medenine and Tataouine
  • the militarized zone in Tataouine Governorate that lies south of, but does not include, the towns of Dehiba and El Borma"

Jamaica

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Jamaica due to the high level of violent crime."

Thailand

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Thailand due to ongoing political tensions and sporadic demonstrations in Bangkok and elsewhere in the country."
