Donald Trump is currently completing a state visit to the United Kingdom, where the Queen has graciously welcomed the president and first lady despite protests against his presence in London.
The trip has not been without its awkward moments, however. Yesterday, seemingly in a panic, Trump greeted the outstretched hand of the Queen by clenching her fist in what appeared to be a power death grip handshake.
Today, the Queen seems to have returned the favour. Social media users claim that the monarch is using her wardrobe to publicly disrespect Trump right in front of him. According to vt, the Queen's choice of tiara tonight has raised some eyebrows.
This particular crown is known as the "Burmese Ruby Tiara," says vt. It is made with rubies that "were a present from the Burmese people," according to the official royal exhibitions website.
"The number of stones represent the number of diseases that the Burmese people believe can afflict the human body. They credit the ruby with prophylactic properties guarding the wearer not only against illness, but also against evil."
The symbolic meaning of the tiara calls into question the Queen's decision to wear it on the evening when she must entertain Donald Trump. Twitter users were quick to praise the queen for this subtle disrespect.
This wouldn't be the first time the Queen appeared to have used her wardrobe to take a political stance. In a 2017 speech to the UK parliament, the Queen wore a hat that looked suspiciously similar to the flag of the European Union — perhaps a nod to her loyalty to a united Europe in the face of Brexit.
