According to a source at The Hollywood Reporter, we have some great news for fans of Crazy Rich Asians: looks like a sequel of the hit summer film is already in the works!
Crazy Rich Asians just blew up the box offices over the weekend and continues to do so throughout the week. Over the weekend, the film grossed $25.24M in Canada alone.
This all-Asian rom-com is actually based on a novel by Kevin Kwan, also called Crazy Rich Asians. The novel was initially published in 2013, followed by a second book China Rich Girlfriend in 2015 and finally Rich People Problems in 2017.
Warner Bros. has the option for Kevin Kwan’s entire trilogy, and we now know that director Jon M. Chu will be back to direct a sequent based on the second book China Rich Girlfriend.
Although Warner Bros. has not yet officially greenlighted the sequel, due to the massive and ongoing success of Crazy Rich Asians, they are moving forward with development.
A few notable plotlines will further be developed in the sequel. This was obviously hinted at in the closing scene of Crazy Rich Asians, as you see Nick’s beautiful and newly single cousin Astrid (Gemma Chan) exchanging glances with a mysterious and handsome stranger in the roof-top engagement party.
And of crouse, China Rich Girlfriend will continue to follow the star couple and lovebirds, Nick and Rachel, as they travel to China to uncover the details of her father's life and past.
Lastly, some unlikely and quirky characters that will re-surface in the sequel are gold-digging Kitty Pong (played by Fiona Xie), the ample-bosomed "adult entertainment" actress who dumps her boyfriend in a heartbeat for party boy Bernard Tai (played by Jimmy O. Yang).
As of now, there is no official date for the release of the sequel, but be assured we will monitor the situation closely and let you know when any more news is announced.
