Today the big news story is about how Ontario has just raised their minimum wage to $15 an hour, and naturally the rest of Canada are getting really jealous.
Especially considering they're also getting unconditional free money.
Every time we see one of these articles posted on social media, the top comment always reads: "Why in Ontario and not here?"
First of all, it's simply because life is unfair. (It sucks, I know.)
But you probably shouldn't freak out too much, because the increase is not in effect just yet.
The first increase will happen on January 1st 2018, where the minimum wage will go up to $14 an hour, and a year later it will be up to $15.
Meanwhile Quebec's minimum will only going up about $1 during the same time period.
So why is the minimum wage so high in Ontario and not in Quebec?
That's because it's all part of an Ontario legislation called The Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017.
According to this plan:
The wages will increase and continue to increase with inflation.
Workers will be given 10 personal emergency leave days a year.
Full and Part-time workers would get equal pay for equal work.
And employers can no longer request a sick note from employees taking personal leaves.
Perhaps it's time for Quebec to revamp their own workplace laws.
