Well, we speculated about it last week but we never actually thought it would happen. Especially not this fast. But almost immediately after Quebec city made their announcement, our city officials quickly jumped on the band wagon.
Montreal is officially banning Pit Bulls.
Mayor Dennis Coderre made the announcement on Saturday after a coroner's report confirmed that it was in fact the pit bull bite that caused the death of the woman in Pointe-Aux-Trembles.
Luckily the Mayor is not completely insane, so no one will be showing up at your door and taking any pit bulls away to be euthanized. Instead there will be a ban on future pit bull adoptions.
As for the people are already own a pit bull, they will have to respect some strict regulations starting this September:
- All pit bulls must be neutered
- All pit bulls must be micro-chipped.
- Pit bull owners will have to submit to an evaluation.
- Pit bulls will be forced to wear muzzles when they're out in public
The mayor also confirmed that the ban might extend to other dog breeds and although they haven't said which breeds it might include, these are the most "dangerous" dog breeds that normally get thrown under the bus:
- Pit bull
Many groups including the SPCA are against this plan of action and have said that they will contest the mayor's plan because they believe that these kinds of rules take away responsibility from the owner and would also cause the death of thousands of dogs.
So even though we're not euthanizing them, we're pretty much condemning them to death.
