Mayor Denis Coderre has been making some big claims for the past few years regarding free WiFi in Montreal. Well, now the speculation is over. Earlier this week, Denis Coderre and Ville Intelligent launched their action plan towards a "smart city".
The first step is that Old Montreal and Palais des Congrès will be getting free WiFi. These will be the first locations of many, to become connected within the next three years. You can view the grid of the city action plan on the Ville Intelligent website. Coderre says that "this initiative will contribute to boost the urban experience of citizens, to make tourism more dynamic, to boost our offerings to business travellers during their time in the metropolis and accelerate the economic development of Montreal.”
The goal is to have Montreal become a leader within the "Smart Cities" community by 2017. This is incredibly ambitious but it looks as though the plan has really taken off. We will just have to wait and see what happens to Montreal under the action of these changes. Hopefully it will do us some good.
