A dream is nearly a reality, as the mayor of Montreal's Sud-Ouest borough has confirmed that the Lachine Canal will become an arctic playground by winter 2015-16, reports Journal Métro.

Only a few weeks ago the project was just a "maybe," but things have changed, as Sud-Ouest mayor Benoit Dorais is quite confident the initiative, which will transform the Lachine Canal into a multipurpose winter activity zone (including snowshoeing, skating, and cross-country skiing) will come to pass.

Montreal's mayor Denis Coderre is seemingly on board, and has even said the city will offer some funds to the project, though no specific details were outlined.

More importantly, however, is the go-ahead and funding from Parks Canada, as the Lachine Canal is technically under the organizations jurisdiction, and the project will need their financial support.

Funds from Parks Canada's Lachine Canal summer budget will need to be allocated to the winter but the organization has already said they are on board with the idea, so it seems likely the Lachine Canal will be the Montreal version of the Rideau Canal come next winter.
