They found the two victims with injuries to their upper bodies. The mother, 55, was declared dead on the scene, while the grandmother, 75, was taken to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The mother is believed to have been suffering from cancer.

It is, as yet, unknown whether there was a motive behind the killings.

The assailant was transported to a detention centre. Prior to the killings, he was already known to the police.

The murders were the 20th and 21st homicides, respectively, to take place on the island of Montreal this year.
