Yesterday, Dennis Coderre was talking about the ban on plastic bags when he added that he would also love to see the same kind of ban applied to water bottles.
Lobbyists for Coca-Cola (Dasani) , Pepsi (Aquafina) and Nestle wasted no time sending the Mayor a letter asking him to meet with them as soon as possible, since they were caught off guard by this announcement.
The water bottle companies claim that bottles offer a practical, clean and safe option for consumers and a ban on bottles would limit the consumer's freedom of choice. They also note that their bottles are 100%, recyclable even though many of them end up in landfills.
Although the idea sounds nice, it's not like it will prevent anything. All this means is that every possible drink will still be available in plastic bottles, just not water. It's not like you're suddenly going to stop drinking, this just means you'll be forced to buy something with sugar in it.
Right now this project is all talk, but if the city actually tries to make it a law, there's no way Coca-Cola will let it happen while they stand idly by and do nothing. After all, it would set a dangerous precedent and other cities might follow Montreal's lead. So coca would no doubt do anything in their power to make sure this project never gets off the ground.
