Montreal To Get The World Cup In 2026?
Denis Coderre announces plans to bring the soccer tournament to the city.
Montreal's mayor may not want the Olympics back in Montreal, but he's gunning for the World Cup. Coderre dismissed the Olympics basically because we've already been there and for the intense amount of taxes forced on the public, though he has high hopes for the international soccer tourney, as reported in Le Journal de Quebec.
Looking ahead to twenty years, Coderre predicts Montreal could host the World Cup in 2026, or even 2022 if now-host Qatar isn't game by then. Game, get it? See what I did there? Sorry, back to the facts.
Coderre has two potential plans for if/when the World Cup comes to Montreal. One involves sharing the love between four other Canadian metropolises. The other is to share the tournament with cities on America's east coast.
For those skeptical of Coderre's lofty soccer goals (last one I swear), the mayor did reference an "excellent" meeting with Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber during his announcement. Who knows how good the meeting really went, or if Coderre brought up his idea, but things are looking up soccer in Montreal.
