Everyone knows that if you're visiting Montreal and you only have time to visit a few historic places in the city, you have to hit up one of the St-Viateur Bagel shops. The memories and history are rich and the bagels are even more delightful. Locals and tourists can agree that if Montreal had to be proud of one thing, it would be our bagel culture.
TL;DR St-Viateur Bagel is closing their location in Monkland on March 11, 2019 after failed negotiations for a new lease. The owner is hopeful that a new location will open in the NDG in the near future. More details below.
Well, you'll definitely be heartbroken to hear the most recent news regarding the famous bagel institution. Today, St-Viateur Bagel announced it will be closing down one of its locations forever.
After 18 years of business, the Monkland location will be closing its doors for the last time on March 11, 2019. According to the owner of St-Viateur Monkland, negotiating a new lease was impossible given the landlord's price hikes.
The good news is that this impending hole in the bagel scene might not last long, as the owner of the Monkland location has already considered opening another location in Notre-Dame-De-Grâce. Stay tuned for more information on the potential opening.
As for the employees of the location, most have already been moved to other locations across Montreal, although not all workers were able to receive a transfer. A goodbye party is currently being planned for customers and employees to celebrate the nearly 20 years of business.
Although the shop will be missed, we can only hope that they'll be reopening in a new location later this year.
