Verdun is getting a beach, making VerFun a potential new nickname for the borough...a solid replacement for the as-of-now-and-not-flattering VerDumb. The urban beach addition will come in 2017, as the borough announced to JdeM today, which will hopefully recreate Verdun's rep from boring to fun.
A lot of specific details surrounding Verdun's beach are still TBD but the location has already been chosen. The borough's old snow dump in front of the Douglas Mental Health University Institute on Lassalle Boulevard (map) will be the beach spot, an ironic transformation of a snowy winter depository into a summer/sandy destination.
Montreal's 375th birthday, in 2017, is the soft-opening date for Verdun's beach, which the borough's mayor described as a "realistic timetable." Hopefully he's right, but either way, add the Verdun beach to the long list of things the city is supposed to get by 2017.
More details are set to come after summer passes, as Verdun's mayor is set to make another announcement in the fall and launch an architectural competition for the beach's design next year. We'll be sure to keep you in the loop as more news on Verdun's urban beach is released.
