Netflix has been a great platform for emerging stand-up comedians to truly shine. Many stand-up comics have been propelled into stardom just from one Netflix special.
For example, I had no clue who Ali Wong was before I watched her incredibly hilarious first-ever Netflix special "Baby Cobra". Soon after it's release, Ali Wong became an international sensation. Even booking the biggest venue at the 2017 JFL festival. She deserves it.
That said, Montreal is home to one of the biggest comedy festivals in the world, the Just For Laughs Festival.
This year JFL will be a little more special because Netflix will be in town recording sets from emerging talents performing at JFL this summer.
These recordings will not only be taken at JFL, but also, at other comedy festivals and performances from around the world.
The recordings will then be compiled to form a ground-breaking new comedy series that will be released on Netflix in 2019. The actual title has not been released yet, though, but it looks like it will be epic!
The focus of this new comedy series will be on fresh voices and diversity. The goal: help you discover your new favorite comic.
It will feature comedians from all walks of life, gender, and ethnicity, and will tape in seven languages (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Dutch, German and English).
If you're curious, here are the comedians who will be performing in Canada:
- Adib Alkhalidey
- François Bellefeuille
- Ivan Decker
- Louis-José Houde
- Katherine Levac
- Dave Merheje
- Deanne Smith
- Trevor Wilson
