Our Hilarious Chat with Bo Burnham For The Just For Laughs Comedy Festival
Get ready to laugh Montreal, because comedy has taken over the city. Starting today July 10th, until Sunday the 28th, Montreal will be host to some of the cream of the comedic crop as the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival kicks off to bring you to cheers and tears of laughter.
JFL boasts an impressive number of shows, ranging from comedy galas, solo acts, themed shows, and many more. With so much talent it can be hard to decide which comic will best tickle your funny bone. To give you a better sense of what’s in store at JFL, MTL Blog will be chatting up some of the premier performers about their upcoming shows. Yesterday we chatted with everyone’s favourite Youtube star: Bo Burnham.
For those unaware, Bo Burnham initially gained notoriety as one of YouTube's first sensations. Creating comedic raps and songs about everything from math to Helen Keller, Bo showed the world his flair for word play and willingness to get a little crass. Since then, Bo has exploded onto the comedy scene, going on tour and even having his own MTV show “Zach Stone is Gonna be Famous,” which just ended its initial run.
Not a stranger to Montreal, Bo has been to the city for JFL before and is still very excited to return with more comedic experience under his belt. Rarely doing sets at comedy clubs and venues, Bo expressed a lot of enthusiasm to be able to do his very own solo show at l'Astral on July 25th and 26th. While Bo “put down the idea of rapping” (and his acoustic guitar) for his performance, he did promise “a lot of dense wordplay” and that the show will be “bigger and more theatrical” than what he's done before.
When asked about his rise to fame via social media, Bo was quite humble in response, stating how he “got insanely lucky.” Bo's advice to comedians seeking to work the online social world is to “just focus on talent [as there is] too much emphasis on social networking. It’s better to let your material promote yourself...I think the new paradigm is slightly unsettling.”
Along with his solo show, Bo will also be performing in the 'Jay Baruchel Gala' on July 25th at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier in Place des Arts. Featuring several comedians with shorter sets, the gala is a small point of worry for Bo. Bo explained how “my own show is my own, I've done it a bunch. The gala I'm gonna have to figure out. I don't do small sets very often, [it is] slightly stressful.” Despite his apprehensions, I'm sure the gala, also featuring Hannibal Buress and Amy Schumer, will be a night of comedy to remember.
A lover of puns and poutine, Bo Burnham will bring a youthful edginess to Just for Laughs and is a great pick for anyone looking for some smart comedy. For more info on Bo's performances, along with all the other JFL shows, be sure to check out the JFL website. Get laughing Montreal!
