The largest producer of pink tomatoes in Quebec is all set to enter the recreational marijuana market.
Les Serres Bertrand will be teaming up with international cannabis company, Canopy Growth, to produce cannabis for the Quebec market.
For this purpose, they'll be using their 700,000 acre area designated for tomato growth to grow cannabis instead.
Initially, the company will apply for a permit to grow medical marijuana. This will be followed by a request to grow recreational cannabis.
Tomatoes aren't as profitable as they used to be, particularly since the ones arriving from Mexico are much cheaper.
Canopy Growth already has seven cannabis production facilities across seven countries.
It is waiting for Health Canada permits. However, it has plans to invest $15 million, in the meantime, to convert existing greenhouses.
Les Serres Bertrand will also convert its in-house storefront into a 'cannabis interpretation centre' to educate consumers about marijuana.
The greenhouses are expected to start growing pot by April.
