Last Friday night in La Pocatière a young man was literally caught on a joy ride... although luckily, he didn't steal the car. However, that is the only fortunate part of the whole scenario.
Not only was he caught going double the speed limit, but he was also driving without a seatbelt, costing him over $2,000 in combined fines.
TL;DR After being clocked in driving 200 km/h or double the speed limit without a seatbelt last Friday, a young man is facing $2,141 in fines, 21 demerit points and has had his license suspended as well as his car seized.
Provincial police have suspended the license of a young man who was caught driving double the speed limit on Highway 20 in La Pocatière last Friday night.
At around 10 PM, the 18-year-old driver was clocked in at 200 km/h in the Bas-Saint-Laurent area and when the police pulled him over they noticed he was also driving without a seatbelt.
The fine for driving without a seatbelt on the highway cost the young man $313 according to CJAD.
That $313 is on top of the whopping $1,828 he will have to pay for driving 200 km/h on the highway outside Quebec City.
The driver has thus earned himself 18 demerit points for speeding and three more for not wearing his seatbelt.
Because Quebec runs on a graduated licensing system, the young man technically only has a probationary license, which was immediately suspended for 7 days.
In addition to the suspension of his license, his car was also immediately seized and towed away. CJAD reports that the young man was driving a Subaru Impreza.
The young man could also face an elongated suspension by la Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec of up to one year.
If he had been driving any later, he could have also faced penalties for having a passenger in the car with him. Drivers who are 19 years old or younger are prohibited from driving with passengers between midnight and 5 AM, in an effort to minimize distracted driving during nighttime hours.
It would appear they were smart enough to have a seatbelt on, as Quebec's laws give demerits and fines for every passenger who fails to buckle up in the car as well.
