Whenever we settle down for a massive binge-watching of Netflix, it's not uncommon to find a few movies that were filmed in Canada. There are even a few Netflix Originals that you can definitely tell took place in cities like Toronto or Vancouver.
TL;DR Netflix is officially releasing it's very first original feature film from Quebec. The movie will be about a militaristic lifestyle on a survivalist camp in the provinces north. No release date is announced yet.
What you don't see often, or actually ever, are Netflix Originals made exclusively in Quebec. The country's broadcasting regulations can be pretty difficult to get around, even for big companies like Netflix. Plus, there just isn't a ton of incredible content coming out of the province.
Well, get ready Quebec, because this all just changed. Netflix really did make its first original feature film out of the province and it's only a matter of time before it's released onto the streaming service.
The film, which will be in French (you can add English subtitles), is far from something you'd want to watch during a "Netflix and Chill" session. In fact, the movie is about a group of survivalists in dangerous off-the-grid Quebec.
The director of the movie, Patrice Laliberté, captures the paranoid mindset and militaristic lifestyle of a survivalist camp. The creators of the film are determined to accurately capture Quebec's "northerness" so we'll definitely be seeing a lot of the rural, uninhabited areas of the province.
Needless to say, this Netflix Original is going to be intense. Imagine the rest of the world being able to watch a film made in our very own backyard? We can only hope more Quebec-made Netflix Originals are slated for the future.
Netflix has already pledged to spend $500 million over the next five years on Canadian productions, so it won't be long before a surge of movies and TV shows from our hometown pops up on the worldwide service.
It's uncertain when this Quebec-based feature film will be released on the site, but we can only hope it won't be too long before we can see our very province gain some representation on a TV screen.
Stay tuned for more information on upcoming Netflix movies and incredible Quebec-based productions.
