Narcissism is a hot-button topic. However, with everyone and their mother publishing articles about what it means to be narcissistic, the subject has been warped and distorted to the point where it's no longer understood and the word is being thrown around like a beach ball on spring break.
All in an effort to help the average person identify a potential narcissist before getting too close by hiring, dating, or befriending them - Psychologists are working hard behind all this ruckus to actually study the connection between certain behavioral traits and their link to narcissistic tendencies.
A team of Psychologist at Universidad de la República recently became interested in the exploring the relationship between handwriting and narcissism.
They hypothesized that there would be a positive link between signature size and narcissism. The bigger the signature, the bigger the narcissist - basically.
Turn out, they were right. Well - partially. Sampling a group of 300 undergraduate men and women they found when it comes to signatures, size does matter, but only for women.
Women higher in narcissism - as measured by a narcissistic personality test- had bigger signatures than their counterparts that scored lower on the test. The same did not hold true for men.
Researchers also found that narcissistic women are more likely to embellish their signatures with exclamation marks or other accents. Similar to how narcissistic women are more likely to adorn their bodies with excessive jewelry and makeup. The researchers say " Handwritten signatures become another type of adornment."
Maybe a fun game for a first date should be "show me your signature and I'll show you mine". You might learn a lot more about them than you would assume.
