Everyone knows that when you're in the public service industry, you basically have to develop a new personality for when you're dealing with customers.
We all have our "fake face" that we put on whenever a client asks us a question. You know, you've got to act really perky and have a huge smile. You need to make the clients feel welcome and like they're the most important thing in your life right now.
Well, that's easier said than done for some people. Honesty and directness are really good qualities, in the right situations. Sometimes, you need to tell people what they want to hear.
Dealing with clients aside, imagine if you had to act like another person the entire time you were at work. That would be a nightmare. Well, apparently it can happen.
At Milestones Restaurant in Vancouver, BC, a waiter was fired and reprimanded for being too aggressive, rude, and well, straightforward with his colleagues.
To that he said, that he wasn't rude, he's just French.
Guillaume Rey worked as a waiter from October 2015 to August 2016 and apparently did not get along with his coworkers. He says that they simply didn't understand his "direct, honest and professional" French personality.
Either way, he was fired because apparently, he did not follow the Milestones code of conduct.
The crazy part is that he was great with customers. He got tons of amazing reviews and was even sometimes asked to take on the duties of a shift leader. So clearly, he was very good at his job. He just wasn't besties with his colleagues. I don't think that's a reason to fire anybody.
Rey actually filed a complaint himself, against Milestones Restaurant and its company Cara Operations at the BC Human Rights Tribunal, saying that he was being discriminated against.
This issue goes both ways. Sure, perhaps Guillaume Rey should've adapted himself to suit Canadian standards; however, his employer should've done the same. People from all over act differently. I think some of his coworkers just need to develop a thicker skin.
