Montreal Economic Institute (MEI) released the findings of a demographic study that aimed at observing job market trends and their underlying causes.
Currently, Quebec is experiencing a shortage of skilled labor workers. According to the findings of the study, one of the primary causes of the labor shortage is the departure of many young Quebeckers to other provinces.
Quebec is struggling to keep its young residents working in the provinces, and as a result, contributing to the province's economic growth.
The study uses data from Statistics Canada and showed between 1981 and 2017, close to 230,000 people under the age of 45 moved to another province.
On the other hand, in our neighboring province of Ontario youth under 15 increase by 17%, and the 15- to 44-year-old population jump 32%,
Why does the grass seem greener in other provinces?
According to the finding of the study economic factors such as job creation, growth prospects, the flexibility of the job market and, more generally, opportunities for personal and professional development are at the forefront of people's decisions to leave Quebec.
A big question still remains: How do we make Quebec a more attractive place for people to stay and work. According to MEI Québec's labor market should allow more space for competition and the private sector, resulting in an economy that is more flexible and welcoming.
