Last year, the STM announced that they wanted introduce something new to make commuters' lives easier .
The idea was to create a mobile app that would completely replace your OPUS card. That means you'll be able to pay for your metro and bus rides directly from your phone.
No longer will you have to put your phone away to fumble for you OPUS card. Actually the app doesn't even require your phone to be unlocked. It automatically detects it as you walk by.
But the best part about all this is that you won't have to go reload your card in person anymore, and you won't need to buy that stupid recharging device.
The app is ready and testing has officially begun to make sure that everything works properly. For now the app is being tested in Laval and Longueuil.
The chairman of the STM said that the app works well, but for now it is only available on Android devices.
The STM also wants to reassure everyone that OPUS cards will still be used for at least the next 10 years and cash payments will always be accepted.
No word yet on exactly when the app will be available to the public.
