I Tried The SQDC's New Cheap Weed & This Is My High-Minded Opinion
Montreal pot dealers, your time is up.
- The SQDC has just introduced its first one-ounce product with less plastic packaging.
- An MTL Blog writer tested out the "Original Stash" and here's their analysis.
This week, the SQDC and HEXO Corp. announced the release of awith less packaging than ever before. HEXO's latest creation, "Original Stash", hit SQDC shelves yesterday, just in time for the anniversary of legalization.
"Original Stash" has 12% to 18% THC and sells for only $4.49/gram, making it the lowest priced cannabis product on both the legal and illegal market. It might sound too good to be true, but HEXO's "Original Stash" sells for only $125.70/ounce.
Conducting my very own and highly unofficial survey, I discovered that on average, people pay between $160-180/ounce on the black market. That has a potential of over $50 in savings and in this economy, savings are crucial.
According to HEXO's CEO Sebastien St-Louis, "Original Stash" intends to "compete directly with the illicit market and will provide consumers with an affordable, controlled, quality product."
Black market dealers take note — after a year of legalization, the government has finally figured out how to sell weed. Now might be the time to take that business class, my friend.
So, to celebrate legalization day, I decided to try out "Original Stash" and give you my honest opinion. Shout out to my roommate David for braving the lines and coming through with the bag.
Before I pour into this, here's some context about your kindly reviewer. I've been an (almost) daily smoker for about 8 years. I enjoy smoking in the evening more than in the daytime. Typically, I skew towards a Sativa with stronger THC content due to my high tolerance.
With all that in mind, here's what's up with HEXO Corp.'s "Original Stash."
The first thing you'll notice about "Original Stash" is its sleek black packaging. A step up from your dealer's dollar store ziplock bags, the packing is triple-lined plastic and is totally smell-proof. Along with the requisite safety disclaimer, there's not much else to it other than the branding.
I've tried many SQDC products and honestly, if they had this kind of simple packaging for all of their products, they'd cut down on so much waste. We're also still waiting for that plastic container deposit, SQDC... Any day now, please.
Be warned, there's a little trick to opening these bags. A child safety tab on the back of the bag must be held onto before you can open the zip lock or else you'll rip the lining and ruin the bag (which almost happened to me).
Despite that, I'm giving this packaging 5 Cheeches out of 5 Chongs.
As soon as you open the bag, you're met with a pungent aroma of fresh cannabis. Take a deep whiff and you'll find earthy scents, with a touch of citrus. For me, the smell is reminiscent of bakery-fresh tsoureki (Greek sweet bread) with a dash of hoppy IPA beer.
The buds themselves are light green with dark orange hairs. Personally, I was expecting a more generous dusting of trichomes on the flower, but it's not lacking in punch. They all seem to be of uniform size, roughly medium to small buds that are densely packed.
The buds are well-cured and easy to break apart in a grinder. There's definitely some stickiness to them, but for the most part, they're exactly what you'd expect from the SQDC.
If you roll your own joints, keep in mind that these buds might look small but are dense AF. The rule of thumb should be 1 bud for a small zig-zag, 1.5 buds for a king-size, 2 buds or more if you're doing a Netflix marathon.
I'm giving the buds 3.5 out of 5 Willie Nelsons.
The product I bought contains 15.02% THC. You rookie smokers might want to steer clear of "Original Stash" because this Sativa-dominant strain certainly packs a punch.
It's flavour kind of reminds me of the weed I smoked in high school — in the best way possible. Top notes of citrus, underscored by a woody aftertaste are the predominant flavour profiles here.
It does have a certain "weediness" to it, so if you're trying to smoke all caché, it's not going to work.
I smoked my first one in the late afternoon and was surprised by how peppy this product is. It's a hybrid strain, but I didn't feel hazy or lazy. I was able to function as I normally would, with a huge feeling of well-being.
My evening smoke, on the other hand, highlighted the Indica effects of this product. I'm not ashamed to say that I ordered a pizza at 11:30 p.m. and went straight to bed after my feast.
I'll take off one point for the weedy aftertaste and lingering odour so 4 out of 5 Joe Rogans.
Calculating the scores, "Original Stash" comes out to just over 4.1 out of 5 "whoa, dudes."
As I mentioned, rookie smokers should stay away, but for those more experienced, an ounce of good weed for $125.70 is a pretty good deal.*
Your usual connect might have to retire because according to rumours, the SQDC will be releasing more ounce quantity products at similar price points over the next year.
