Dating A European Girl VS Dating An American Girl
What to expect on a first date.
Before you start freaking out, I want to warn you that this post is obviously a generalization. Having lived in Europe for 12 years and in North America for 14, I feel quite comfortable comparing the two. This article might come in handy if you're dating a girl with a European background or if you're just curious about different cultures. What I like about Montreal is - it combines both European class and North-American know-how in a subtle way that just works. There are, however, certain differences that I noticed, especially in the dating world. Let's imagine a couple that just met each other and are going on a first date.
1. Picking a restaurant
American girl: She might suggest a few restaurant options to choose from and let you know if she's vegan or is allergic to certain things. An American girl might want to take initiative and decide where the two of you should have dinner at.
European girl: A European girl is more likely to let you decide where you want to take her out for dinner. You have carte blanche.
2. Getting to the restaurant
American girl: She might suggest to meet up directly at the restaurant. It's your first date, she's not comfortable with you coming to pick her up.
European girl: A European girl will probably expect you to come and pick her up.
3. Ordering at the restaurant
American girl: She might suggest to share a plate... she can also order a full hearty meal, like steak and fries. If she's hungry, she won't care what you think of her eating preferences.
European girl: She will most probably opt for something light, like a salad. Alternatively, a European girl can ask you to pick something for her.
American girl: An American girl can be very flirtatious and open about the way she feels about you. If she likes you, she can totally say something like, "I really like you, you're a lot of fun."
European girl: A European girl prefers to be mysterious and not talk about the way she feels about you. You will have to solve her like a puzzle.
American girl: She doesn't mind a few glasses of wine that can potentially turn into tequila shots and sake bombs. An American girl knows how to have fun. Getting tipsy at a date makes everything so much more exciting.
European girl: She will most probably stick to wine and keep it under control. If you were planning on getting her drunk, you might want to reconsider your plan.
6. Paying the bill
American girl: She won't mind going dutch, but she will appreciate it if you offer to pick up the bill.
European girl: She will most likely expect you to pay.
7. Saying goodbye
American girl: If she likes you, she'll probably make out with you at the end of the night. When an American girl REALLY likes you, she might totally invite you over for some drinks that same night.
European girl: You're not getting any action, not even a kiss. Physical affection needs to be earned.
8. Going home
American girl: The most you have to do is walk her back to the car or cab, but it's not really necessary. She's an independent woman and doesn't need your assistance.
European girl: You're driving her home, remember?
9. Sending the "good night" text
American girl: If an American girl had a good time with you, she will send you a text that same night or the next day, "I had a great time with you! We should do it again soon :)"
European girl: You won't hear back from a European girl unless you text her first.
10. Planning a second date
American girl: She might totally invite you on a second date! Does joining her and her group of friends for a fun night out sound good? Cool.
European girl: Unless you ask her out for another date, there are extremely low chances of her taking initiative in this department.
