Strong winds rattled the province last night. Though our sometimes precarious seeming apartment buildings are thankfully still standing, over 14,000 people are without electricity as of 9:01 a.m. That's down from a peak of 46,000 Hydro-Québec clients without power at 11:00 p.m. on April 13, according to a Twitter post from the Crown corporation.

UPDATE: There are 12,561 Hydro-Québec customers without electricity as of 9:16 a.m.

"Our teams are hard at work and we estimate that the majority of customers will get electricity back during the day," it wrote Tuesday morning.

In Montreal, fewer than 300 Hydro customers have no power.

But it seems the surrounding regions were harder hit.

At the time of writing, Lanaudière has 2,797 Hydro clients without power, Laurentides 2,553, and Montérégie 4,439.

According to a preliminary summary of the storm from Environment and Climate Change Canada, winds reached speeds of 90 km/h in much of the province.

In Montreal, the highest recorded gust was 102 km/h.

On social media, there are scattered reports of minor damage, including downed trees.

The wind storm and resulting outages come as people across the province attempt to work from home and avoid non-essential travel.

Hydro had previously committed to rescheduling non-urgent planned maintenance on its network to minimize service interruptions for its customers.

On its website, it also explains that its "teams will continue to respond:"

• "in case of an outage;"

• "in case of an incident that could jeopardize public safety;"

• and "to provide service connection for residential customers with imminent move-in dates."

"In the context of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, we would like to reassure you our employees are on the job and will continue to be here for you.

"Hydro-Québec management has put its emergency measures into action, which means that a special committee is holding daily meetings to track the evolution of risk levels associated with COVID-19."
