We Spoke To Famous Montreal Pig Christopher About His Instagram Fame
And this little piggy, didn't go home.
- MTL Blog got the chance to interview our city's very own Christopher the Pig about his evergrowing fame.
- Read below to find out about this famous piggy's love for snacks, social events, and charity work!
So I'll be honest, I was totally overthinking meeting Christopher the Pig. I mean, he's a pig for god's sake. But I couldn't help but think: what if he doesn't like me? What if his lack of pig endorsement says something about my lack of character? What if we don't become besties? What if we will never hang out on a couch cuddled up together?
I had a hopeful image is clear in my head about how our first encounter would go. It would be like the beginning of an unlikely roommate sitcom trope. Christopher, always getting up to something mischevious, and I - the by the book rule abider - always shaking my head warily, but with enough of a hint of a smile that let the audience know I’m amused and love the big lug.
"…he’s about 160 pounds now." Jonathan respectfully interrupted from my pig reverie. Jonathan is the owner of Christopher the Pig, and I was now standing by the front door of his Saint Henri apartment waiting for Christopher to finish peeing outside in the front yard.
His apartment is like any other only, just that there's a 160-pound pig ambling about. This is the one and only Christopher the Pig, the most famous Instagram model currently in the room. And like many Instagram stars, Christopher is a lot bigger in person than he is in photos.
Christopher has grabbed the world’s attention by being the ultimate travelling pig. He’s amassed nearly 82,000 followers on Insta alone, has been interviewed by almost every Montreal news site, has his own line of swag, company sponsorships, and even a personal agent.
And it seems we cannot get enough of him.
Christopher’s Instagram is a testament to his travel throughout the US and Canada. He’s made his way through California, Arizona, Nevada, Boston, New York, Nova Scotia, and Alberta – just to name a few. And makes regular appearances around different Quebec cities. I mean, this pig has travelled.
As you go to look at his Instagram page, and then suddenly look up and realize its two hours later, don't say we didn't warn you of the cuteness overload you are about to embark on.
Not all the fame has gotten to Christopher’s head, though. Jonathan has done a good job keeping him grounded. Christopher is the ambassador of The Lighthouse in Montreal, taking the time to visit kids staying at the palliative care hospital on the regular.
Jonathan is also organizing an all-vegan gala fundraiser, starring Christopher, for the end of November with all proceeds going towards The Lighthouse.
Jonathan always wanted a pig before he ever even met Christopher. “We decided to adopt. I saw that this family wanted to abandon him, so I knew I had to rescue him.”
Christopher is now a registered service animal, so technically he is welcome anywhere, which makes it easier to travel these days.
“We kind of cheated. We used to call hotels ahead and ask if it’s pet-friendly without telling them what kind of pet. But, when we call up people now they’re begging us to come to their hotel.”
Who wouldn’t want a star frequenting their establishment?
One of the first things I notice about Christopher is that he goes wherever the food goes.
“Eeeee Oiii Ouaaaaa!!!”
I’m taping the interview with Jonathan. And that’s how the recording app transcribes the high-pitched squealing noises Christopher makes. And they’re loud, really loud, and coming from the kitchen. I’m guessing he’s either being fed or wants to be fed.
In case this article is giving you ideas about getting your own pig; caring for one is not as easy as other pets. “They're super intelligent. They’re as intelligent as four-year-olds. And they're super stubborn. If he doesn’t want to move, he's not going to move. He does not care. Food is the only motivator for Christopher.”
Christopher sleeps about 70% of the time, so he makes a perfect road trip companion. “Our first trip was a month and a half through the US. As soon as he hits the backseat, he passes out.”
Christopher has yet to take his first overseas trip, but they are in the works to take a private plane to see how he fares. Because as bad as a crying baby can be, I can only imagine the sound of a constantly squealing animal who you just discovered they have a fear of flights.
With Christopher’s growing popularity, he’s recognized more than ever. Everyone seems to want a pic of the travelling pig. “Everywhere we go, we get smiles. Everybody's super happy to meet him.” Nevertheless, it can get exhausting to be so beloved.
“He gets tired after a few hours at almost any event. After about four hours, he starts to get antsy and tired of all the attention. He lets us know.” That’s about 3.5 hours longer than most of us could hang on, so it’s still pretty impressive.
But, Christopher loves the attention and doesn’t mind fans petting him, according to Jonathan, he is super affectionate and loves to cuddle (as I hoped).
Christopher and Jonathan have a lot of ideas in the making from a clothing line to a café where you can chill with them. They have also just finished a children’s book – because who wouldn’t read the adventures of Christopher the World Travelling Pig?
It’s becoming more difficult to keep up with Christopher’s rising fame. I mean, this pig is going places. Jonathan’s previous partner used to handle the social and video editing aspects, but now he's doing it all alone. So, here’s a call out to anyone who wants to donate a little time to editing a pig’s adventures - feel free to contact them on Insta!
There was one thing I still had to know though, and that was what the neighbours think of sharing a front yard with a pig?
“There’s a lot of kids in the area and they think it’s fantastic that a farm animal lives there.”
Jonathan goes on to say, “Well, you’ve got two kinds of people in life. You have the ones who are always bitching and the ones who are gonna love him.”
Before I left Jonathan's, I tried to grab a quick pic of Christopher. I didn't want to come across as a star-struck fan, so I was all cool and nonchalant like, “oh yeah, I nearly forgot, mind if I grab a photo?”
So, I took my pic and bent down to pat Christopher on his head. But, I had no food. He wanted nothing to do with me. That’s cool, Chris. I guess our sitcom will just have to wait for another day.
