Police Catch Suspects After Violent Homophobic Attack On Lesbian Couple

In viral post to Facebook Thursday, a woman in London, England detailed a violent homophobic attack that she and her girlfriend survived at the end of May. Melania Geymonat's post has garnered widespread domestic and international attention, including from political leaders in the United Kingdom, and over 12,000 shares.

The London Metropolitain Police promptly issued a notice asking to the public for help to identify and locate any potential suspects. "Police are appealing for witnesses and information after two women were assaulted and robbed in a homophobic attack on a bus in Camden," the notice reads.

Now, police have confirmed that they have made an arrest. In a post to Twitter, the agency shared that "arrests have now been made and the investigation remains ongoing." Though images and identities of the suspects have not yet been made public.

In her post, Geymonat also includes a critical message:

"I’m tired of being taken as a SEXUAL OBJECT, of finding out that these situations are usual, of gay friends who were beaten up JUST BECAUSE. We have to endure verbal harassment AND CHAUVINIST, MISOGYNISTIC AND HOMOPHOBIC VIOLENCE because when you stand up for yourself shit like this happens."

"By the way, I am thankful to all the women and men in my life that understand that HAVING BALLS MEANS SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. I just hope that in June, Pride Month, stuff like this can be spoken out loudly so they STOP HAPPENING!"
