Quebec police are taking traffic infractions seriously this travel season. According to TVA Nouvelles, a Quebec driver earned a $1,603 from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) for going almost double the speed limit on autoroute 40. Police caught the driver going 190 km/h in a zone where the limit is 100 km/h.

The 29-year-old driver received an additional fine of $313 for deteriorating tires, the TVA report continues. The incident occured, according to several reports, between the municipalities of Portneuf and Saint-Marc-des-Carrières.

Radio-Canada further explains that the man received 18 demit points and will have his license suspended for 30 days.

The area in which the man was speeding is a mostly rural zone between Trois-Rivières and Québec City. A look at Google Maps confirms that the speed limit is 100 km/h with a minimum speed of 80 km/h.

According to information from the Société d'assurance automobile de Québec (SAAQ), the fine of $1,603 is actually in excess of the regular price of such a violation.A SAAQ document makes clear that the standard fine for "excessive speeding" of between 190 and 194 km/h in a 100 k/h zone can reach $1,110 with 18 demerit points.

However, for a fourth offense or greater, the fine can reach $1,665. It is unclear whether this was the driver's first offense.

On multiple occasions this summer, the SQ has conducted operations on Quebec roads to more strictly enforce traffic laws.

Over the St Jean-Baptiste and Canada Day long weekend, for example, the SQ dispatched additional officers to catch traffic rule violators at a particularly busy stretch of the travel season.

Stay tuned for more information and be sure to always follow the direction of officers and local traffic rules.
