Montmorency Falls is one of the most visited and photographed sites in all of Quebec. The magnetic waterfall sits within the Parc de la Chute-Montmorency, outside of Quebec City. This towering natural spectacle is one of the tallest in all of Canada — 32 meters higher than Niagara Falls — and is especially remarkable for its varying beauty. But though its cloud of mist and cool spray are refreshing in the summer months, it's during the winter, when the water begins to freeze over, that the falls are their most spectacular. 

This phenomenal site is just a 2 hour and 45-minute drive from Montreal and is totally worth the journey.

Already this winter, visitors have posted hundreds of photos of the falls.

The otherwise lush landscape has become a white tundra, the spray from the falling water freezing before it hits the ground, accumulating into a small hill at the foot of the falls.

Icicles hanging from the cliffs beside the falls seem to double their size.

The spectacular views and sublime beauty have inspired many, including John Keats in his poem "Sleep and Poetry."

There are a ton of spots where you can get a good view of this gift from nature but my personal favourite is the suspension bridge that hangs over the cliff of the falls.

For a more creative view of the falls, consider engaging in one of the many activities in the park.

Take a ride in a cable car or trek through the site by snowshoe.

The more adventurous among us can even "take up the ice-climbing challenge" — pulling yourself up the frozen walls next to the falls.

Note, however, that, this winter, ice climbing is not permitted on the east and west sides of the waterfall, according to Sépaq.

Moreover, ice climbers must register at the Manoir Montmorency before beginning their journey.

In any case, Montmorency Falls in the winter is the ideal backdrop for a good old fashioned social media photoshoot.

The glistening water freezing over creates a sparkle that truly resembles a winter wonderland.

If we are going to live in a country that is this cold, we might as well take advantage of the beauty it provides us.
