Rare Tick That Makes People Allergic To Meat Found In Canada

A Lone Star tick, a rare tick that can cause strange disease in both dogs and humans, has been found in Oakridge, Ontario. According to CTV news, a veterinarian is sounding the alarm after finding a Lone Star tick on a cat.

One of the bizarre effects of a bite from this tick is the fact that it can make people allergic to red meat. Yes, that's right, there's a bug that can turn people vegetarian (kind of). Nature is pretty metal.

The tick was found on a cat with no travel history, which means that it encountered the bug locally. Veterinarians are urging people to always scan their bodies for ticks after spending time outside.

Our Breathing Planet explains that, "The Lone Star Tick does not pose any disease risk, as such. However, it does pose a serious and rather unique health risk."

The Lone Star tick causes a serious allergy to red meat, though scientists can't exactly explain why. They believe that the presence of an alpha-gal sugar in the saliva causes the allergy. Sounds nasty!

When a human who has been bitten eats red meat they can experience symptoms like hives, vomiting, and diarrhea. In other words, you're just better off not eating red meat.

Symptoms can persist for many months. There is no known cure except for avoiding red meat altogether.

The tick used to only be found in the south of the United States, but, like many other ticks, it is spreading to Canada.

Experts told CTV that, when you go out into the woods, you should always check your body after. Tick know to hide in places where they are hard to catch like armpits, scalps and behind the knees.
