Secret Option On Facebook Messenger To Allow You To Send Money To Your Friends

As the top ranking social media site, with 900,000,000 estimated unique monthly visitors as of October 2014 according to eBizMBA, Facebook clearly knows how to tune into market demand and is apparently working on giving users a quick and secure money transfer feature on their Messenger app.

Users were recently forced by Facebook to use the Messenger app as a stand-alone in the hopes of keeping a smooth functionality on their main app as well as presumably to compete with other stand-alone messaging apps out there such as Apple iMessage, Rakuten’s Viber, Google Hangouts, Tencent’s WeChat, Line, KakaoTalk,  Kik, to name a few. Messenger payments could give user's a whole new reason to choose Facebook chat over the others.

Stanford computer science student Andrew Aude recently displayed that this feature already exists and that it's simply just waiting to be turned on by Facebook. According to screenshots on Aude's Twitter taken using iOS app exploration developer tool Cycript, the code is there, allowing for peer-to-peer payments in much the same way users can send each other pictures. It's as simple as adding a debit card in Messenger, or using one they already have on file with Facebook.

That said, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly stated that this technology is definitely in the works, but will not be actually available anytime soon as he wants to make sure they handle it properly. And as Facebook is apparently looking to roll out a Buy button for making ecommerce purchases straight from the News Feed, it seems to make sense that they would monetize Messenger.

Apart from standard swipe fees and network fees, chances are this feature would be practically free for users, at least initially, and would definitely make spotting your broke buddy some cash for some grub a virtual breeze. Score.
