Actor/comedian Aziz Ansari, perhaps best known for his role as Tom Haverford on Parks and Recreation, is currently in Montreal this week.
Ansari tweeted on Wednesday that he's doing "super small shows" in our fair city this week in order to work on new jokes. The way admittance to these shows works is by random draw, and a $10 fee at the door per person, and wouldn't you know it, MTLblog was there!
As Ansari walked up to the stage just 10 feet away from me, the tiny crowded room at Comedy Works erupted. I've got to admit, I kind of lost myself in how freakin awesome it was to see Aziz Ansari in person!
His whole set revolved around relationships, and was (obviously) hilarious. He discussed the back and forth texting game people go through when they meet someone new. And then he asked if anyone in the audience had met someone recently, had a conversation via text but didn't have it lead anywhere. One guy admitted he met a girl in his Italian class but that it was a dead end. So Ansari takes his phone and READS OUT LOUD, IN A ROOM OF 50 PEOPLE, his entire conversation history with this girl, had the audience weigh in on the situation and even had the guy text her that very moment. The amazing thing is, the conversation was nothing special, but Aziz Ansari is talented enough that he can bring the funny, even in the most mundane things. It was hilarious!
After an hour and a half of pee-in-your-pants laughter, was a Q&A for about a half an hour. To be able to talk to the guy was something else entirely. Even when he's not trying to be funny, he's funny.
Overall it was an amazing experience, considering he usually performs sold out shows to stadium-sized audiences and is kind of a big deal in the comedy world. Having that kind of accessibility to someone that famous is crazy awesome!
