Last week we announced that Starbucks would officially be adding a Beyond Meat Breakfast Sandwich to their menu for those coffee lovers who need a little something more in the morning but aren't interested in meat. Well, it has officially arrived and, as per usual, I scurried to the store early this morning to snatch one up and give it a try. If you're looking for an honest review of the Starbucks Beyond Meat Breakfast Sandwich from someone who does still occasionally eat meat, here it is.
I think it's important to preface this article with the honest truth, which is that I do still eat meat on a semi-regular basis. Though for a period of about 5 years, I didn't eat any red meat or poultry, so I am very familiar with the world of meat alternatives.
So I'm not coming at this as someone who is expecting the sandwich to taste like a real meat patty, but I also know the difference between a meat alternative that is working (aka is delicious) and one that is not.
So here are some of my thoughts on the all-new Starbucks Beyond Meat Breakfast Sandwich.
For $5.95, the sandwich consists of a homemade bun, cheddar cheese, an egg and a vegetable-based patty. The Starbucks Beyond Meat patty was designed with a unique recipe that consists of a "special blend of herbs and spices, including oregano, basil, rosemary and fennel."

The size is about the same as any other small breakfast sandwich, like a Sausage Egg McMuffin from McDonald's, for example, which retails for $4.19.
The increased price is to be expected though. This is Starbucks, after all, and the Beyond Meat does inevitably cause a mark-up.

The sandwich itself is really good and I'm pretty sure I would order it again... even if the price is a little steep.
The unique blend of spices does a good job at working with the really distinct Beyond Meat taste which I have found overwhelming in other sandwiches that include the popular meat alternative.

I also tried the now late Tim Hortons Beyond Meat breakfast offerings when they first launched and I would say the Starbucks sandwich is superior.
It was juicy and flavourful, not at all dry and the spices are really delicious. This sandwich works on its own and as a meat alternative.
Whereas with the Tim Hortons sandwiches, I really liked the wrap because it had a super flavourful southwest chipotle sauce, I found the Starbucks Beyond Meat Breakfast Sandwich to be really satisfying as is, no sauce required.

I think this is going to be a great option for vegetarians as well as anyone who is simply open to choosing a non-meat option now and then.
As for the vegans... I guess we're just going to have to wait and see if Starbucks comes up with something for y'all soon.
