Study Warns: Montreal Is At Risk For An Earthquake

A new study is warning that Eastern Canada's big cities including Montreal are at risk of facing some of the strongest earthquakes in the world, and we are not prepared.

A lot of people don't know this, but Montreal is located in one of the most earthquake-prone regions of the East.

So far this year, Quebec has seen two tremors measuring between 3.0 and 3.5 on the Richter scale, and according to experts, more are on the way.

If the city were to be hit by anything close to an earthquake measuring 6.0, it would cause $45 billion in economic losses.

The last time this happened in Montreal was in 1732, and seismologists are predicting that the city has a 15% chance of being hit by an major earthquake in the next few decades.

Many other regions in Quebec are predicted to be hit within the next 10 years.

And it's not just earthquakes, in 1929 there was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake off the shore of Newfoundland that caused a tsunami which killed 28 people.
