Summer Showdown: Ben & Jerry's vs Yeh!

Its hot, humid, and you have sweat dripping in places you wouldn't care to admit. Oh, and you're feeling a little peckish. So, being the smart cookie that you are, you decide to appease your climate and hunger needs in one fell swoop: eat a cold and delicious treat. An seemingly easy solution, but now you must choose: do I go for ice cream, or frozen yogurt?

To answer this summer conundrum we are putting the two largest (and arguably best) purveyors of ice cream and fro-yo into the ring to duke it out for the title of king of summer snack-age. It is Ben and Jerry’s VS Yeh! in a summer sweets showdown!

These titans of frozen treats will duke it out in several categories to decide the winner. Both will be judged on their price, variety, nutrition, and of course, plain 'ol taste. Lets get this rumble started.

Price: Ben and Jerry’s offers a fixed price per scoop to all of its clients. You can grab a single scoop for $4.50, two scoops for $6, or a full pint for $6.50. You may have noticed an odd correlation there, as for only fifty cents more you get WAY more ice cream in a pint than two scoops. They're basically charging for the convenience of a scoop of ice cream.

Yeh! prices go by weight: 59 cents per ounce of fro-yo + toppings. Seems pretty reasonable, but no one can really know, by ounce, how much they're putting into their cup. What usually occurs is a final weigh in which amounts to $9 dollar tab. I've been there, and I'm sure so have you.

While Yeh! does have the potential to be cheaper, more often than not that isn't really the case. On the other hand, B&J is a little wonky in their pricing scheme as well. Gonna have to call this one a tie.

Variety: When it comes to ice cream few can top B&J in amount of flavors. B&J boasts an impressive 30 flavors, which are updated yearly, and also feature seasonal flavors. At least 7 different toppings are available and you can put your ice cream in a cup, cone, or waffle bowl/cone. Aside from just ice cream, B&J also offers smoothies, milkshakes, sorbets, floats, banana splits, and their delicious and custom-made ice cream cakes.

Yeh! is no slouch in this category either. 12 flavors are usually available, often accompanied with seasonal/holiday flavors along with fruit sorbets. To top it all off you can choose from 7-12 different fruits, 25-30 toppings (ranging from healthy granola to straight up cookie dough) and a mix of different sauces. You can put it all in a waffle bowl, or just grab a crepe, cappuccino (Yeh! boasts a a fully operational espresso machine) or smoothie Needless to say, you can craft a different fro-yo nearly every visit. Ben and Jerry’s does come close, but just be sheer numbers, this round goes to Yeh!

Nutrition: If you're living a guilt-free life than nutritional info may not really be a big deal for you. Congrats, skip this section. For all the skinny betches reading, here's the breakdown. Yeh! only shows the dietary info of its original flavor on its site, which boasts only 110 calories and 0 g of fat per 100g serving. B&J doesn't really have an unflavored original to compare with, but vanilla comes close. Basic vanilla at B&J comes in at 260 calories and 17g of fat per 112g serving. A huge difference. This may seem like a clear cut win for Yeh! but bare in mind that the many toppings and other flavors were not included in the nutritional total. Sure, you can be healthy at Yeh! if you try, but there is a lot of wiggle room to get all fat with it.

Flavour: Now here is what really counts, how good each one really tastes. Full of fat and infused with chunks of brownies, swirls of cinnamon, and even potato chips (I'm looking at you 'Late Night Snack') the ice cream at B&J is a flavor super-storm. If you've ever had half-baked, you know what I'm talking about. I can't say I've had a flavour I didn't like. Even some of the stranger choices like 'White Russian' and the new Greek yogurt flavors are great picks. I'm sure you already have a favorite flavor, so no need to go on.

Yeh! is arguably just as good. While I have a personal preference for peanut butter and their new Greek yogurt with honey, any choice can be a winner. With so many toppings available to you, a simple original can be dressed up into something delicious and wild.

But while Yeh! allows for creativity, their base flavors, undressed, don't hold a candle to B&J's options. B&J's flavor combinations are created by ice cream experts and are always delicious. At Yeh! you run the risk of combining unflattering toppings, and at times I've found the fact that the additions are simply toppings, and not combined into the fro-yo, as a hindrance to the eating experience. So when it comes to unadulterated flavor, B&J takes the ice-cream cake.

In truth, your not gonna make a poor choice with either Ben and Jerry's or Yeh! If you looking for a late night creamy treat (the Maisonneuve/Crescent location is open 'til 3am during the summer months), or something chock full of fatty goodness, go for B&J. Or you could be looking for something a little more adventurous, with the option to be healthy if you want, and be able to chill and grab a coffee in Yeh!'s arguably more comfortable atmosphere. To each his/her own, just know the facts and eat up!
